Islamabad Introduces Owner-Based Vehicle Registration System

Muhammad Naeem:
Islamabad: The Excise and Taxation Department of Islamabad has announced a major shift in its vehicle registration process by introducing a U.S.-style registration model. A formal notification issued by the Director General outlines the new policy, which transfers the registration number from the vehicle to the owner.
Under this system, each vehicle owner will be issued a permanent, personalized registration number that remains linked to their name, rather than the vehicle. This policy applies to both newly registered and already existing vehicles in Islamabad.
When a vehicle is sold, its registration number will no longer remain with the vehicle. Instead, the previous number will be deactivated, and the new owner will be issued a fresh registration number.
The notification also mentions that an individual can retain their assigned number plate for up to one year even without owning a vehicle. If the number remains unused beyond this period, it will be automatically canceled.
This initiative is aimed at improving transparency, simplifying the transfer process, and bringing Islamabad’s vehicle registration practices in line with international standards.
