On day eight of the track and field events at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Arshad Nadeem made history by winning Pakistan’s first-ever Olympic gold in athletics. The 27-year-old javelin thrower achieved an Olympic record with a throw of 92.97 meters, surpassing the previous mark of 90.57 meters set by Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen at the 2008 Olympics.
Nadeem’s golden throw came after a challenging start, with his first attempt being a foul. However, his second throw broke the Olympic record and secured his place at the top of the podium. Nadeem was the only Pakistani athlete, among the seven who qualified for the Paris Olympics, to be fully supported by Pakistan’s National Sports Board for the 2024 Games.
Reflecting on his achievement, Nadeem credited his improved technique: “My technique has changed a bit. I have worked on my technique; it has gotten better now, and because of that, I have succeeded in making the mark here,” he said. He also expressed his ambition to surpass his own record in future competitions.
Neeraj Chopra Takes Silver
In a thrilling showdown, India’s defending Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal with a throw of 89.45 meters. Chopra had entered the finals as the top qualifier, having thrown 89.34 meters in the qualification round, ahead of Nadeem’s 86.59 meters. However, Nadeem emerged as the only athlete at the Paris Olympics to clear the 90-meter mark twice, including a final throw of 91.79 meters.
Despite his silver medal performance, Chopra has maintained a strong competitive record against Nadeem over the years. According to Olympics.com, the two athletes have faced each other in ten international competitions, with Chopra leading the head-to-head tally 9-1.
A Rivalry for the Ages
The rivalry between Nadeem and Chopra has captivated athletics fans worldwide. Chopra has been a consistent performer in javelin throw, setting a high standard for India in athletics. However, Nadeem’s historic victory in Paris marks a new chapter in their competition, highlighting the intense competition between the two javelin throwers and setting the stage for future showdowns on the global stage.
