Pakistan Joins Global AI Alliance as Founding Member of WAICO

Islamabad: Pakistan has become a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO), joining a new international platform aimed at advancing global cooperation in artificial intelligence, digital innovation and emerging technologies.

The announcement was made by Ali Mustafa Dar, Adviser to the Chief Minister of Punjab on AI and Special Initiatives, through a post on X. The development coincided with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar’s two-day official visit to Shanghai, China, where he attended the organization’s inaugural ceremony.

According to the Foreign Office, Dar travelled to China at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to participate in the launch of WAICO.

During the ceremony, the deputy prime minister signed the founding agreement on behalf of Pakistan, formally making the country one of the organization’s founding members.

As part of his visit, Dar is also scheduled to address the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance on July 17, where he will outline Pakistan’s vision for responsible AI development and greater international collaboration in artificial intelligence.

On the sidelines of the event, Dar is expected to hold bilateral talks with Wang Yi to review Pakistan-China relations and discuss regional and international issues of mutual interest.

The Foreign Office said Pakistan’s participation in WAICO reflects the country’s commitment to fostering international cooperation in AI, digital transformation and innovation while further deepening its strategic partnership with China.

In addition to official engagements, Dar is expected to meet ministers and senior representatives from participating countries to explore new avenues of cooperation in artificial intelligence, technology, research, innovation and digital economy initiatives.
