Emergency measures initiated at Karachi airport over Ebola threat

Karachi: Emergency measures have been initiated at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport in view of possible Ebola virus threats.

The Sindh Health Department has issued an alert at the airport and decided to further tighten the monitoring system. Following the global Ebola emergency, the Sindh government became active and a high-level meeting was also held in Karachi regarding the matter.

According to the health department, the Ebola virus is extremely dangerous; therefore, instructions have been issued to all relevant institutions to remain on high alert.

The meeting decided to make the immediate response and isolation system at Jinnah Airport more effective, while the presence of ambulances round the clock would also be ensured.

According to officials, monitoring of suspected passengers would be further tightened and a separate storeroom would be established for emergency supplies, including PPEs.

Officials from ASF, FIA, Civil Aviation, Border Health Services and the health department attended the meeting.

Officials stressed the need to strengthen coordination between Border Health Services and the Health Department, while it was also decided to begin special training for frontline staff and awareness sessions for health professionals.

Resolve was also expressed to conduct mock exercises for dealing with Ebola cases and to ensure continuous monitoring at the province’s entry points.
